Athletics & Intramurals


Competitive Softball                                                                                          Minimum grade 6; Maximum grade 8

Tryouts for both Varsity and Junior Varsity will take place on Wednesday, April 3rd and 4th, 2024 afterschool. Meet outside the girls locker room (wear appropriate clothing for outdoors, dress warmly, rubber cleats or turf shoes, NO METAL cleats) Bring all necessary softball equipment to the session.

GMS Coed Outdoor Track                                                                                Minimum grade 6; Maximum grade 8

Our season starts on April 3rd afterschool. Meet in the cafeteria. Students should dress warm as we will be practicing outside daily.

Session 1- Coed Intramural Volleyball                                                 Minimum grade 6; Maximum grade 8

Meets on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning April 17th-May 13th in the Gym.

Session 2- Intramural Flag Football                                                     Minimum grade 6; Maximum grade 8

Meets Monday and Wednesday beginning May 15th- June 10th from 2:45-4:15. Meet in the movement studio. There will be a cap of 40 kids

Session 2- Intramural Field Hockey                                                    Minimum grade 6; Maximum grade 8

Meets Wednesdays and Fridays beginning May 15th- June 7th from 2:45-4:15. Meet in the Gymnasium and head to the fields. Equipment will be provided. Mouth guard recommended.

Student spectators, please register here for each GMS basketball game you plan to attend. 

If you have not registered, you will not be admitted to the game.


Welcome to Groton Middle School Athletics/Intramurals Registration!


Before any student may participate in athletics/intramurals, the following requirements must be met.

1) A completed registration- Partial or incomplete registrations will not be accepted.

2) A current Physical- All participants must have a current physical on file in the School Nurse's office which will clear them for participation in athletics/intramurals. The physical must be on file prior to participation in athletic try-outs, practice or games.  A physical is current if it has been less than 13 months from the date of exam. Students with physicals that expire during the season, will not be able to continue until a current physical is on file with the School Nurse.

The parents/guardians are responsible for filling out this form completely and ensuring that any and all medical information concerning your child's health, medical concerns, injuries, medications, and allergies are reported to the School Nurse.  

3) Academic eligibility- Students must meet the academic requirements of Groton Middle School (passing all classes).

All registrations must be approved prior to the first day of practice/tryouts for that season. Coaches will be notified as to which students have met all registration requirements.


Travel Release Policy:

If parents choose to transport their son or daughter to and/or from away contests they must complete the Transportation Waiver Form (click to open link) and turn it in to their coach prior to the contest. Athletes must be picked up by their own parent/guardian or FamilyID authorized pickup person. No parent is allowed to transport another individual child to or from GMS athletic away competitions. 

Eligibility Rules for Participation in Sports: 

In order to be eligible for Groton Middle School Athletics and Intramurals, students must be passing all of their classes.

GMS School Based Health Center: 

There is a School-Based Health Center (SBHC) located at GMS. The SBHC provides comprehensive physical and behavioral health and well care to students. An APRN (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) and a Behavioral Health Clinician are experts in adolescent health and employed by UCFS Healthcare offers services. SBHC services and care will supplement and coordinate with services and care provided by private pediatricians. Services are billed to insurance carriers, and assistance is available for those who are not insured. SBHC’s services include yearly well-child examinations, vaccinations, sports physicals, and acute and chronic care visits. The GMS SBHC is a convenient way for student-athletes to obtain a physical when they are unable to obtain a physical in a timely manner with their pediatrician. You must be enrolled in order to use the SBHC services.
